My brother Nick died August 10, 2005 he was 17 yrs old. It was a wednesday night, I was playing softball my husband called and said I should come home.....why I said I'm almost done.........Nick is dead...........the worst three words I have ever heard in my life. Nick was given methadone by a 15 year old girl and her mother who both had their own prescriptions. They also found clonapin in his system which the mother had a prescription for. The daughter had been caught at school selling her methadone, and was only charged with smoking cigarettes. Nick was an amazing young man. He was a state champion in BMX racing, football, basketball, you name it he was good at it. He was just starting to turn into a man, and I was really looking forward to our future as a family. No longer was he my annoying little brother, he was someone I could talk to, hang out with, and love. He was a mentor to my son, teaching him all the moves for football. My son was devasted when he died, and still does not like to talk about it or watch our videos. Instead honors his uncle by also becoming a state champion in BMX and following his footsteps in all sports, and in becoming an awesome man. The police in our town decided that there was no crime committed in the death of my brother, and charges were never filed. Since his death there has been probably 10 people that have died from methadone overdose in our town alone, and thats just the ones we know about. They have finally formed a task force to stop prescription abuse, and prosecute those who deal rx drugs. I miss my brother every day, but I know that he is with God and I will see him again. We will spend eternity in heaven never worrying about death again
